Himalayas & Tourism

You want some bragging rights after your next vacation? You need to stay away from the post resorts and go somewhere that might cause you to die, just by walking around the roads – the Himalayas. Not for the faint of heart (literally), the Himalayas is a place where you can enjoy pristine nature settings and even gain some respect among your friends. Even though you don’t have to hike Everest to enjoy the Himalayas, you might want to see what’s happening at these altitudes.

Preparing for the Himalayas

Before you head off to the Himalayas, you will want to prepare your body and talk to your doctor. Unlike other vacations, when you’re at these high altitudes, your body is going to have a hard time coping if you’re not in shape. One way to prepare is to slowly make your way up to Nepal and the Himalayas, staying at different hotels and lodges along the way. This allows you to slowly acclimate to the altitude, building up your strength. And if you still feel sick at a higher altitude, then you can move down the mountain and enjoy your vacation there. Talk with medical professionals to make sure that you’re ready for the next mountain and if that’s something you need to train for.

Places to See

Let’s face it, the Himalayas are a place where you can just look out the window and enjoy everything around you. But here are some popular tourist spots to check out:

  • Bardia National Park
  • Corbett National Park
  • Himalayan National Park
  • Royal Chitwan Park

You can also enjoy more spiritual sites at:

  • Amarnath Yatra
  • Char Dham Yatra
  • Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
  • Kedarnath

No matter where you end up in the Himalayas, on the Nepal side or the India side, you will want to try out some trekking in the mountains, assuming your health is up to the task. If not, then you might want to choose something that’s a little more touristy, or employ the use of a yak to get you from point A to point B.

Not Quite Mount Everest

If you’re in better shape and you want to try Everest, you can sign up for a hiking expedition that takes you to Base Camp on Everest. This is still a lengthy hike, but you will not need to go up the icy sides of the mountain or use oxygen, in many cases. This look at the Himalayas is intense, but you will certainly enjoy bragging rights just for being in the shadow of Everest, even if you never take a step closer to it.
